Kingston Garden Services designed the courtyard garden situated at first floor level at this project in Southwark.
The contract then was to install scheme; source containers and overcome logistical problems of getting 82 cubic metres
of compost onto the roof.
Cranes and road closures were identified as being too expensive and potentially disruptive
to road traffic. A more simplistic approach was adopted even if it was much more arduous. Pallets of material were
delivered to site in small lorries fitted with a crane. These vehicles could then self unload and the sealed pallets
could then be fork lifted into position with a telescopic handler. Once at roof level the soil could be distributed
via power barrows (previously lifted into position using the forks). All plant material and the specimen olives were
lifted into position using a similar modes operandi.
This project was of special significance because it meant that we
had planted in excess of 100,000 plants in one year!
